Whether you know it or not, you’ve heard a song crafted by Julian Bunetta.
The legendary producer, engineer, and songwriter is best known for co-writing and producing countless chart-topping pop and country hits, including One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” Niall Horan’s “Slow Hands,” and Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” to name a few. In total, Bunetta’s songs have amassed around a whopping 30 billion streams and received multiple GRAMMY nominations.
In the video above, Julian Bunetta invited us to his Nashville home to give the Splice community an exclusive studio tour. Join us as he provides a walkthrough of his gear and shares insights around his mic setup, favorite synths, background in drumming, and more.
For Bunetta, the single thing that matters most in a studio isn’t having all of the world’s most expensive gear, but building a space that fosters collaboration. “I really like having everything modular and movable,” he shares. “You can see that I have everything wrapped up in these little snakes so that when there are different people around, I can wheel them to different parts and have different sorts of setups.”
This also extends to his final—and in his words “most important”—piece of advice. “Get yourself a watch,” he smiles. “It can be on your phone or your computer, but the most important thing when you’re working with people in a session is knowing what time lunch is and knowing what time dinner is, ’cause you got to keep your people fed, okay? And you got to know the great restaurants in the city to order from. Good food, good song. They’re synonymous. I promise.”
